Can I Use A Shipping Container As A Garage?

July 31, 2025

If you’re looking for a safe and cost-effective way to store your car, motorbike, or caravan; the idea of using a shipping container as a garage might already be on your radar. And it’s no surprise why. Shipping containers are strong, weatherproof, and a much cheaper option than building a brick garage.

But can they actually work as a garage? What kind of preparation is needed? And what should you consider before adding one to your property?

At Upminster Containers, we’ve supplied thousands of containers for all sorts of uses; from construction sites to home storage. In the years since lockdown, we’ve also seen an increased demand for shipping containers to be used as garages, workshops, and home gyms.

If you’re considering doing the same thing then this blog is for you. Below we answer the most important questions that could help you to decide if it’s the right fit for your needs.

Why Use A Shipping Container As A Garage?

Containers are ideal for outdoor use and make excellent garages, thanks predominantly to their durability. They’re built to withstand extreme conditions at sea, making them more than capable of handling British weather, even the really rainy days!

Benefits include:

  • Security: Constructed from heavy-duty steel, they are naturally resistant to theft or vandalism, especially when paired with an industrial padlock and security cameras.
  • Weatherproof: Containers are sealed against rain, wind, and extreme heat (although in England we don’t normally worry about the latter!) It’s important however, that you consider your foundations when deciding where to place the container. If the area is prone to damp for example, you may need more robust groundwork preparation. You can read more about this in our recent blog here.
  • Affordable: Much cheaper than building a permanent garage, especially for short-term or semi-permanent use.
  • Portable: You can move or relocate them as needed, unlike a traditional building.
  • Fast setup: Delivery and installation typically takes under an hour once the site is prepared.

What Size Container Do You Need?

This depends entirely on your available space and vehicle size/width. At Upminster Containers we offer sizes from 5ft-40ft, but the most popular sizes for garages are:

  • 20ft shipping container: Approx. 6.1m long x 2.4m wide x 2.6m high. The capacity is 33.1m2 which is suitable for most standard cars, small vans, and motorbikes.
  • 40ft shipping container: Approx. 12.2m long x 2.4m wide x 2.6m high. The capacity is 67.6m2, making this size better for storing a larger vehicle or include space for tools or racking.

Can You Drive A Car Into A Shipping Container?

Shipping containers have a raised steel floor that sits above ground level; so although you can drive into it, you’ll need to consider the ground leading up to it. Most vehicles can be driven in with the help of ramps, which can be supplied by the team at Upminster Containers.

If you plan to regularly drive a vehicle in and out, installing a roller shutter door instead of standard container doors can also make access much more practical.

Do You Need Planning Permission?

This depends entirely on how and where you place the container. In the below cases you may not need planning permission, however it’s always best to check with your local council before proceeding with any alterations on your land:

  • The container is being used for domestic storage or vehicle housing only.
  • It’s located within your property boundaries, behind the building line.
  • It is not fixed permanently to the ground.

In the below cases you may need to apply for planning permission:

  • The container is connected to utilities (electricity, water, drainage).
  • You live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, conservation area, or near a listed building.
  • The container is part of a commercial operation or visibly alters the character of the site.

What Kind Of Base Do You Need?

A flat, stable surface is key to supporting your container and ensuring that the doors function properly. Avoid placing containers directly onto soft ground, as this can lead to settling, uneven weight distribution, or moisture buildup. You don’t necessarily need full foundations, but we do recommend:

  • Timber sleepers or concrete pads at each corner; simple, effective, and easy to install.
  • Paved or gravel hardstanding which is ideal for drainage and airflow.
  • A level concrete base is best for long-term or converted garage use.

Modifying A Shipping Container For Garage Use

A standard container may work well as-is for secure storage. But if you want to turn it into a functional garage space, consider adding:

  • Lighting and electrics: For evening use or charging tools and batteries. Our partners at Templant can provide generators for electricity should you wish to choose a non-permanent option.
  • Ventilation: Helps prevent condensation buildup.
  • Insulation or lining: Useful if you’ll be working inside or storing temperature-sensitive items.
  • Shelving or tool racking: To make the most of the interior space.

At Upminster Containers, we offer a full range of conversion services, and we can modify containers for garage use before delivery. If you decide to fully convert your shipping container in the future, perhaps as a workshop or external accommodation, we can also help with this. Have a look at a few of our recent conversions here.

What Are The Limitations?

Using a shipping container as a garage is practical in many cases, but it’s worth being aware of a few potential limitations. However, these challenges can usually be addressed with the right modifications and planning. The team at Upminster Containers are happy to help with advice based on your site and intended use.

  • Interior width: This can be tight for some larger modern SUVs. Always ensure that when measuring, you take the wingmirrors into account.
  • Standard doors: Shipping container doors can be heavy and awkward for frequent access without modification.
  • Condensation: This can be an issue if no ventilation is added.

Do You Offer Garage-Ready Containers?

Yes! At Upminster Containers, we offer:

  • New and used containers in from 5ft-40ft sizes
  • Delivery at a different location, should you need to add a garage at a work location
  • Roller shutter or side-access doors
  • All units come with ventilation as standard
  • Electrical fittings, shelving and more

What Next?

With minimal setup and maximum durability, choosing to use a shipping container as a garage is an excellent alternative to building a permanent structure; especially when space, or budget is limited.

Just be sure to:

  • Choose the right size container for your vehicle
  • Prepare a solid, level base
  • Consider access and ventilation
  • Check with your local council to see if planning permission is needed
